Having confirmation of that is good so I know I'm not just crazy and missing it. When I couldn't find the legend functionality I started going through the help topics and didn't find anything referencing it so I assumed it wasn't implemented yet. That known issues doc is going to be helpful, thanks for pointing it out.

Even if Esri throws all their weight behind Pro I don't see the other applications going away any time soon which means we have to keep Map/Catalog in front of students because that's what they're more likely to encounter once they go out into the work world. Ultimately it will be the instructors that decide which direction to take things for students and they're always hesitant to change. When it does crash, make sure you send a report on why! I've sent a couple already. They want you to test drive it, crash it and throw random things at it to see what happens. It's not final a release and don't be discouraged because it isn't acting like one. Look through the 'Known Issues' doc and it lists that as one (of many) items not yet added. I'm glad to see them stepping up and trying to embrace that now.Īs for the legend, there isn't one yet. ArcGIS 10.x is running on an old foundation and it really wasn't taking advantage of what today's computers offer. I've worked in the ESRI suite of applications since before ArcView 2.1 and can say that ArcGIS Pro brings a breath of fresh air I think ESRI needed.

I see a lot of potential in the future though.

If it proves to be stable and fully functional I think the fact that it's a 64bit application is worth the pain of relearning how to do things.Īfter playing with it for a bit, I can certainly recommend not pointing this to students right now. I am tentatively optimistic about ArcGIS Pro. Do we point intro level students at ArcGIS Pro now? Or stick with the classic applications until Pro proves it has traction? We've also thought of bringing ArcGIS Online into the fold but it's lack of administrative controls makes it essentially useless as a teaching platform.

I work at a University building teaching material for GIS classes and one of the things we're starting to discuss is which software package(s) in the Esri suite we should be putting in front of students.

The one major issue I've run in to so far is that I can't seem to add a legend to a layout. Only crashed it twice in that time :)Īs someone who had spent 90% of their desktop GIS time in ArcGIS I can tell you the new interface makes it frustrating to use, but only because I'm so used to doing things a certain way in ArcMap/ArcCatalog and sometimes those ways just aren't there. I started playing with it this afternoon for a couple of hours.
